The European territorial cooperation objective provides financing to the remaining 2.5% of the programmed expenditure and refers to: cross-border and interregional cooperation projects within the so-called ‘European territorial cooperation’; cross-border cooperation through joint local and regional initiatives; and transnational cooperation, which seeks an integrated territorial development, and interregional experience sharing and cooperation. The population in the cross-border areas amounts to 181.7 million people (37.5% of the total population of the European Union), while one of the thirteen transnational cooperation areas that exist encompasses all the regions and all the citizens of the European Union. EUR 8,700 million (2.5% of the total) is available for this objective and is divided as follows: EUR 6,400 million for cross-border cooperation; EUR 1,830 million for transnational cooperation; and EUR 445 million for interregional cooperation. This objective is based on the experience of the former INTERREG Community initiative.
