Structural Funds interventions aim to reinforce the economic, social and territorial cohesion of the European Union. Through these interventions, the EU seeks to redress development imbalances amongst European regions, as well as welfare disparities. This allows for a sustained, sustainable and eco-friendly development, from which all citizens will benefit day after day.

The European Union takes part in our daily lives through the Structural Funds. Nearly 50% of the EU budget is earmarked for the people living in the regions that need it the most. In conjunction with the assistance from the Member States and private investment, EU actions make it possible for regions to build infrastructures, to turn innovation into a reality, to protect the environment and to take care of employment and training needs.

There is however a lack of communication between the European Union and its citizens, who are to a large extent unaware of the work developed by the Funds and the activities of the EU. That is why information represents a major challenge in the new programming period of the Structural Funds 2007-2013— a challenge that involves shared responsibility.

In this sense and in an effort to improve communication between the European Union and its citizens, the Community regulation laying down the rules for implementing the Structural Funds in the new programming period 2007-2013, also suggests some guidelines to help create a Communication plan that will make the interventions co-financed with the Structural Funds more visible.

Thus, Castilla-La Mancha has drawn up an Information and communication plan for the Structural Funds. By joining up our efforts, we will make the Funds more visible in the region. On September 26, 2008 the Communication Plan of the Operational Regional Programmes of ERDF and ESF of Castilla-La Mancha was declared "accepted" by the European Commission. This Communication Plan reflects, with the specificities resulting from the actions showeds in the relevant Operational Programmes and the implementation of the principle of proportionality, the communication strategy defined jointly by the Managing Authority and all Intermediate Bodies responsible for the various Regional Communication Plans Network established for that purpose, the GERIP (Spanish Group of Officers in the field of Information and Publicity).
